Change your N9 desktop background vol. 2

Hi!

A few weeks ago kuzmichov posted instructions to talk.maemo.org on how to change the background of your N9’s home screen.

Kuzmichov’s instructions change the backround of the component behind all the swipable home screens. Today we’ll be changing the backgrounds of the 3 individual screens.

For that, we need to edit a different .css file,
/usr/share/themes/base/meegotouch/meegotouchhome/style/meegotouchhome.css

We want to add a background-image tag into three CSS blocks: SwipeEventsStyle, SwipeLauncherStyle and SwipeSwithcerStyle.

Naturally, we’ll need three images as well, let’s name them like this:

background-image-launcher.png
background-image-events.png
background-image-switcher.png

Copy these images into /usr/share/themes/blanco/meegotouch/images/backgrounds/

The code in the CSS blocks of meegotouchhome.css will become like this:

SwipeEventsStyle {
… code …
background-image: background-image-events
}

SwipeLauncherStyle {
… code …
background-image: background-image-launcher
}

SwipeSwitcherStyle {
… code …
background-image: background-image-switcher
}

In addition to that, comment out/remove the background-color tag from NotificationAreaStyle, so the notification area background will become transparent. The messages themselves will still have a semi-transparent background color (most likely there’s a tag for that too but don’t know where).

Reboot, and you should have three nice background images!

You can download the modified meegotouchhome.css from here.

For some reason, when swiping between the events feed and app grid, there’s a 1 pixel wide column
between the backgrounds. Most likely there’s not much that can be done for that, but it’s a minor glitch anyway : )

Here’s an example of my home screens:

Have fun!

    Nice, thanks!
    Are you planning to release a new & improved My-Moves soon?
    Been quite a while since the last major release…
    If you’re not already charging a small fee at Nokia Sotre you should IMO.

      No clear plan currently. You know how it goes in the open source world, things and interests on different things vary at times 🙂

      • Jed says:

        Bummer…. 😦
        Wouldn’t it grab your interest more if you were making money from it?

      • sandst1 says:

        Nah. Money is just one factor among others in the whole picture.

      • Jed says:

        What else would drive your interest towards continued work on it?
        Can you not see other things you could implement that would keep it interesting.
        There’s no shortage of users/fans that could help if you have “programmers block”?

      • sandst1 says:

        Nope, haven’t got a programmers block. My interests on cooking up software are quite varying so one week i might be doing project A on platform X, the next week project B on platform Y. So currently the interest is not completely on the Harmattan side.

        Aand, there’s also this thing called life which doesn’t always leave time for freetime coding 🙂

        It’s unfortunate Maemo6x no longer interests you that much.
        You would’ve been an invaluable asset to the struggling Maemo community.
        Then again Maemo’s always been terminal, & yet somehow vibrant at the same time.
        So w/any luck it’ll be as vibrant as ever in 3yrs* for you to revisit, if you’re so inclined.
        Anyway, best of luck in your future projects!!!

        *albeit in a very different form.

    Could you share your wallpaper?

    • Jed says:

      He isn’t your personal support guy…
      You should be posting such questions at TMO or FMC
      You can post your thread link here I guess.

      • Xaxatix says:

    • sandst1 says:

      No application, that is CSS code which goes to the .css files the post describes.

      I don’t know, perhaps meego theme daemon or sth similar accepts
      changing style parameters via command line, haven’t really tried.
